When Everything Changes in an Instant

The Brookdale Fire — Our Family’s Story of Loss, Gratitude, and New Beginnings

October 21, 2026  |  Clinton, Mississippi

Most of the stories we share on JacknDiane.net are about our travels, the places we visit, and the memories we make along the way. But sometimes life takes us in a direction we never expected.

This is one of those stories.

On Wednesday, October 21, 2026, a devastating fire swept through Brookdale Senior Living in Clinton, Mississippi. For many families, including ours, life changed in a matter of moments.

Jack’s mom, Jackie Noel, better known as Gran, was a resident at Brookdale.

We are incredibly thankful that Gran survived and is safe. But like so many others affected by this tragedy, she lost everything she owned in the fire.

UPDATE — November 1, 2026

We have some wonderful news to share! Gran moved into her new home at The Waterford on Highland Colony in Ridgeland on October 29. She has a nice one-bedroom apartment, and we've found a place that meets her care needs. After a very difficult week, we're thankful she has a comfortable new place to call home.

That gives you two connected stories: the first about the fire and Jackie's safe evacuation, and the second about Gran's new beginning. It also gives the original story a hopeful ending without minimizing the tragedy.

Just Minutes Before the Fire

That Wednesday afternoon started like so many others.

Jack stopped by Brookdale around 4:30 p.m. to visit his mom. They spent some time together, and just before 5:00 p.m., Jack left to head home.

At the time, Gran was in the dining hall rather than her room.

Neither of them could have imagined what was about to happen.

Around 5:00 p.m., a fire broke out at Brookdale. Shortly afterward, the fire alarms sounded, and the staff began evacuating residents.

Fortunately, Gran was still in the dining hall. Brookdale staff quickly escorted her and the other residents directly out the back door and safely away from the building.

When we think back on that afternoon, the timing is remarkable. Jack had been there only minutes earlier, and Gran happened to be in a location where staff could quickly get her outside.

A Tragedy in Our Hometown

While Gran made it out safely, the fire was devastating.

Firefighters and emergency personnel from multiple departments responded as residents were evacuated. Tragically, two residents lost their lives, and many others lost their homes and belongings.

Our hearts go out to the families who lost loved ones and to everyone whose life was changed by this tragedy.

We are grateful for the firefighters, first responders, caregivers, and community members who helped during the emergency.

Everything She Owned Was Gone

For Gran, Brookdale wasn’t simply a place to live. It was her home.

Her clothing, furniture, personal belongings, and the familiar things that made her room comfortable were all lost.

Some things can be replaced. Others, especially personal keepsakes and treasured memories, cannot.

It’s difficult to imagine having to start over at this stage of life.

But through everything that happened, we keep coming back to one important thought.

We still have Gran.

And that’s what matters most.

An Unexpected Week Together

Following the fire, Gran came to stay with us.

It certainly wasn’t a visit any of us had planned, but we were thankful to have her with us while we figured out what came next.

Our priority was finding a new home where she would be comfortable, feel safe, and receive the care she needed.

On October 27, we met with the director at The Waterford on Highland Colony in Ridgeland, Mississippi. After visiting the community and discussing Gran’s needs, we felt we had found the right place.

On October 29, just eight days after the fire, Gran moved into her new home at The Waterford.

She now has a nice, furnished one-bedroom apartment in a community that meets her care needs. After losing everything, having a comfortable place to begin again is a tremendous blessing.

There are still personal belongings to replace and adjustments to make, but we’re grateful that Gran has a new home.

Finding Gran a New Home

Yesterday, October 27, we met with the director at The Waterford on Highland Colony in Ridgeland, Mississippi.

We are happy to share that we have found Gran a new home.

We feel good about the arrangements we have made for her care and the opportunity for her to begin a new chapter.

One of the biggest blessings is that her new room will already be furnished.

After losing everything at Brookdale, knowing Gran can move into a furnished room takes an enormous burden off our shoulders.

There will still be clothing, personal items, and other belongings to replace. But those are things we can take care of one step at a time.

Tomorrow, October 29, we will help Gran move into The Waterford and begin getting settled.

We hope this will be the beginning of a peaceful and comfortable new chapter for her.

Moving Forward With Gratitude

If this experience has reminded us of anything, it’s how quickly life can change.

At 4:30 that Wednesday afternoon, Jack was making an ordinary visit to see his mom. Less than an hour later, everything had changed.

We spend a lot of time writing about our travels and the unexpected adventures that come with life on the road. But this was an unexpected journey of a very different kind.

There were no scenic overlooks or beautiful campgrounds. Instead, there were concerns, family decisions, and the challenge of helping someone we love begin again.

Our thoughts and prayers remain with everyone affected by the Brookdale fire, especially the families who lost loved ones.

As for our family, we have much to be thankful for.

We’re thankful Gran was in the dining hall when the fire started. Thankful for the Brookdale staff who helped her escape. Thankful for the week we spent together. And thankful that she now has a comfortable new home.

There is still some settling in to do, but the most important thing is that Gran is safe.

Sometimes life reminds us that the most important part of any journey isn’t where we’re going.

It’s the people we get to share it with.
