A New Home for Gran — A New Beginning

After the Brookdale Fire, Jackie Noel Settles Into Her New Home at The Waterford

November 1, 2026 | Ridgeland, Mississippi

Sometimes, after a difficult week, a little good news is just what everyone needs.

And today, we're happy to share some.

Gran has a new home!

As we shared in our earlier story about the devastating fire at Brookdale Senior Living in Clinton, Jack's mom, Jackie Noel — better known to our family as Gran — lost everything she owned when the fire swept through Brookdale on October 21.

Thankfully, Gran escaped safely, and she spent the following week staying with us while we worked through the challenge of finding her another place to call home.

We're happy to report that things are looking much brighter.

Finding Just the Right Place

After the fire, our biggest priority was finding a place where Gran would be comfortable, safe, and receive the care she needs.

We weren't simply looking for another room. We wanted a place that would feel like home.

Our search led us to The Waterford on Highland Colony in Ridgeland, Mississippi.

After meeting with the director and touring the community, we felt we had found the right place.

The facility is very nice, the surroundings are welcoming, and most importantly, the arrangements checked all the boxes for Gran's care.

That was a tremendous relief.

After everything that happened at Brookdale, knowing Gran would have a comfortable place to live, with the support she needs, meant a great deal to all of us.

Moving Day — October 29

On Thursday, October 29, Gran officially moved into her new home at The Waterford.

And it's not just a room.

Gran has a nice one-bedroom apartment!

Having her own bedroom and living space gives her a place to relax, enjoy some privacy, and begin establishing a new routine.

One of the things we especially appreciated was that her new apartment came furnished. Since Gran lost all her belongings in the Brookdale fire, that made the transition much easier.

There are still personal items to replace and plenty of little details to take care of, but the important thing is that she has a comfortable place to start again.

And for us, that means a lot.

A Fresh Start After a Difficult Week

It's hard to believe how much has happened in such a short time.

On October 21, Gran was enjoying an ordinary afternoon at Brookdale when everything changed.

Within minutes, residents were being evacuated, firefighters were battling the blaze, and families were facing an unimaginable situation.

Gran was fortunate to be in the dining hall when the alarms sounded. Brookdale staff helped her and the other residents exit through the back door and move safely away from the building.

She lost her belongings, but she was safe.

That is something we will always be thankful for.

After spending a week with us, Gran now has the opportunity to settle into her new surroundings and begin rebuilding a sense of normalcy.

We know that adjusting to a new home takes time, especially when the move wasn't something she planned or expected.

But we believe The Waterford will be a good place for her.

So Much to Be Thankful For

The past several days have reminded us how quickly life can change and how important family really is.

There have been plenty of decisions to make, things to arrange, and concerns to work through.

But there have also been many reasons to be grateful.

We're thankful Gran escaped the fire safely. We're thankful we could have her stay with us while we figured out the next steps. And we're thankful we found a place where she can receive the care she needs and have a comfortable home of her own.

Our thoughts and prayers continue to be with the other Brookdale residents and families affected by the fire, especially those who lost loved ones.

We know that not everyone's story has had the same outcome.

Home Sweet Home, Gran!

There's still some settling in to do, but the biggest step is behind us.

Gran has a new apartment, a new community, and a chance to begin again.

And after everything she's been through, that's pretty wonderful news.

Welcome home, Gran!
