 Jekyll Island, Georgia

Jekyll Island Campground

This is our first rally with the South Carolina Coastal Airstream Club. We do know a few people from the Airstream Club International Rally in Sedalia, Missouri last year. We are looking forward to meeting a few more people and having a great time on this trip. This would be an opportunity to take Jekyll Island off the bucket list that we have. Looking forward to it.

Jekyll Island, Georgia April 30 – May 5 with South Carolina Coastal Airstream Club

Wednesday – April 30, 2025
We left at 5:50 a.m. We made good time as we traveled to Tallahassee, Florida, with our normal stops in Hattiesburg and Buc-ee’s in Loxley, AL for fuel.

We are staying at a Harvest Host location, the Tallahassee Automobile Museum. The museum looks very interesting. This Harvest Host location doesn’t have any hookups. The weather was nice. It was breezy enough that we sat outside for a little while. Later, the gnats got a little too bad, so we moved inside.

We had opened the windows, and with a small fan, we were very comfortable. Later in the evening, we set up the generator so we could use the AC unit for the night and the microwave to warm up dinner.

After a long day of driving, we didn’t tour the museum but did pick up a few souvenirs.

Thursday – May 1, 2025
We got on the road at 7:30 a.m. Traffic wasn’t too bad for most of the day. We made good time. We arrived at the campground at 11:45 and couldn’t check in. They sent us to a beach access parking lot, which was amazing. The breeze, a covered table right on the Atlantic Beach. A great place for lunch.

About an hour later, the campground called to let us know we could check in. We really weren’t ready to go yet, as we were enjoying where we were.
Shortly after the call, we packed it up, drove back to the campground, and checked in. The road is a little tight, but we got in, set up, and met a few of our group members that were there.

Chris and Carey arrived about the same time as we did. After we both got set up, we went for a bike ride before the group gathering.

Happy hour started at 4 p.m. and dinner at 5 p.m. with the group. We all went to dinner at The Wee Pub. The food was good, and we met a few more new friends.

Friday – May 2, 2025
We rode bikes early in the morning before we had to leave for St. Simons Island. The trails are great.

Late morning, we visited St. Simons Island. It seems to be more developed or commercialized but not in a bad way.

We began our tour of Fort Frederica around 10 a.m. All the information was very interesting, and our tour guide, Ranger Bob, did a good job. There is a lot of history here, and it has so many large trees; they are very majestic. I’m not sure the pictures do them justice.

After the tour, we ate our snack lunch on Fort Frederica grounds.

Fort Frederica

Friday – May 2, 2025
After our tour of Fort Federica, we moved on to Christ Church at Federica for another tour.

We had plenty of time to explore Christ Church’s grounds and cemetery before the tour started, as there was a delay in starting the inside tour.

Christ Church was small but nice. Built in the 1800s. So, there is a lot of history here, and Katherine did a very good job with our tour. Many stained-glass windows include John and Charles Wesley, who started the Wesleyan Methodist Church.

Lots of original things: the pews, the floors, stained glass.

Back to the campground, and the club provided a potato bar for supper. Then, we sang around the campfire that evening.

Christ Church

Saturday – May 3, 2025
We went to the club breakfast and then headed out on our big bike ride with Chris and Carey. About 12 miles, I think. We went to the shopping center and then to the historic district. We got back in, ate, and loaded the truck to leave on Sunday. Their friends came in from Savannah. They were thinking about an Airstream. We went to the club dinner. We watched the Kentucky Derby, then headed to the RV. That night, we stayed at the bonfire past my bedtime, but it was fun.

Magnificent Trees and Sunset at Jekyll Island

The Historic Horton House

Horton discovered the land on Jekyll Island to be exceptionally fertile, cultivating crops for the nearby Frederica Settlement and brewing Georgia’s first beer at his plantation. The site features the DuBignon Family cemetery, as they owned Jekyll from 1790 to 1886, residing in the house until the mid-1800s. The Horton House, one of Georgia’s oldest tabby structures, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Starting our trip home today with our overnight stop at Meaher State Park in Mobile, AL. It was raining early, but it stopped in about an hour. The day cleared up and ended up with a beautiful blue sky and a great sunset.

We made it to Mobile in time to sit outside and enjoy the view of the Mobile Bay and the weather. Very little humidity. We ate supper outside and watched the sunset.

Overall, this trip we saw 26 Airstreams on our travels. (excluding all that were in the park) We have not seen that many on the road that we can remember.
